Design & Production

The BFA Theatre Design and Production program prepares students for work in professional theatre or film productions as well as those looking for more advanced training in graduate school.

Program Overview

The BFA Theatre Design and Production program offers courses in set, lighting, sound and projection design. Students in this program gain practical experience while building their academic foundation in theatre history and theory.

Curriculum

Along with their courses, students in the BFA Theatre Design and Production program are required to participate in Department productions. This allows our students to put their theory into practice as they will help plan, design and build costumes and sets for theatre and film productions.

Admissions

Thank you for your interest in our program!

The application portal for September 2024 has closed. Applications will reopen in October 2024.

Students new to UBC wishing to apply to the BFA Theatre Design and Production program must complete the online UBC application by January 15 as well as the required supplemental material on this page by February 1.

If you are applying directly from secondary school or transferring from another institution, you must list the Bachelor of Fine Arts Theatre Design and Production program as your first or second choice degree program in the online UBC application. Please note that applicants who list a program as the first choice will be considered before applicants who list a program as a second choice.

The BFA Design & Production program accepts transfers into their second and third year from UBC and other post-secondary institutions.

Students from UBC Vancouver who are enrolled in another faculty or enrolled at UBC Okanagan must apply to transfer to the UBC Faculty of Arts by January 15, prior to completing the Design & Production supplemental application.

For current UBC Vancouver students in the Faculty of Arts interested in transferring into the program, you do not need to complete the online UBC application but must submit the supplemental application material by 11:59pm PST February 1. We also recommend completing the required first year courses for BFA Theatre Design & Production students:

  • THTR_V 120 or 130
  • THTR_V 150

THFL_V 100 is restricted to BFA students within the department, so this requirement is waived for second year transfer students.

For students applying from other post-secondary institutions who are interested in seeing how their courses might transfer to UBC Vancouver, refer to the the online course transfer guide for British Columbia. Production courses completed at other post-secondary institutions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

If you have particular questions regarding Theatre or Production course credits, you can contact the Academic Administrator, Mia Faircloth.

Students interested in the BFA Theatre Design and Production program must submit supplemental material through our secure form below. Further questions can be directed to Mia Faircloth (mia.faircloth@ubc.ca). Please complete the following:

  • A letter of intent. This should describe your interest in design and production and your goals in the program as well as university. The letter must include your student identification number and should be uploaded in pdf format.

UBC was where I discovered my love for working behind the scenes in theatre. I was able to act, design sound, build scenery, work as a Head Electrician and TD, and begin to feel my way through the world of lighting.
