The BA Film Studies program aims to educate students on the diversity of cinematic practices and their impacts on societies around the world.

Program Overview

In film studies, our goal is to educate students in the diversity of World Cinema and cinematic aesthetic practices. Throughout our curriculum, we encourage students to explore and discuss the cultural roles of films and how they impact our political and social perceptions.

Students enrolled in the film studies program will be able to:

  • Analyze a film both in content and form
  • Identify cinematic traditions in Asia, Europe and North America
  • Discuss Canadian film history and criticism
  • Write extended essays on cinematic topics
  • Understand major film theories
  • Publicly speak on film issues
  • Write reviews and essays for the media

Curriculum

The BA Film Studies program offers major, honours and minors options to support students at all interest levels. Our talented faculty members are renowned experts in various specialties of film studies. Their engagement and dedication to research and the cinematic industry provides students with a stimulating academic environment.

Students interested in a major in film studies must complete the following course requirements:

  • FIST 100
  • 9 credits of FIST 200-level courses
  • FIST 331
  • FIST 445
  • 24 credits of FIST 300- 400 level courses

The honours program is for students with a keen interest and critical mind for the screen arts, who want to join a thriving community of students and scholars. The program is also for talented students who are considering graduate studies in the field.

Admissions into the honours program is by application only. Please review the admissions section for more details on the application process.

Students interested in the film studies honours program must complete the following course requirements:

  • FIST 100
  • 9 credits of FIST 200-level courses
  • FIST 331
  • FIST 445
  • FIST 449
  • 39 credits of FIST 300- 400 level courses

Students interested in a minor in Film Studies must complete the following course requirements:

  • FIST 100
  • 9 credits of FIST 200-level courses
  • 15 credits of FIST 300- 400 level courses
  • 3 additional 300-400 level credits offered by the Department
