Program Overview
In Cinema Studies, our goal is to educate students about the diversity of World Cinema and cinematic aesthetic practices. Throughout our curriculum, we encourage students to explore and discuss the cultural roles of films and how they impact our political and social perceptions.
Students enrolled in the Cinema Studies program will be able to:
- Analyze a film both in content and form
- Identify cinematic traditions in Asia, Europe and North America
- Discuss Canadian film history and criticism
- Write extended essays on cinematic topics
- Understand major film theories
- Publicly speak on film issues
- Write reviews and essays for the media
Curriculum
The BA Cinema Studies program offers major, honours and minors options to support students at all interest levels. Our talented faculty members are renowned experts in various specialties of Cinema studies. Their engagement and dedication to research and the cinematic industry provide students with a stimulating academic environment.
First and Second Years
Students are required to take CINE_V 100 and 9 credits of CINE 200-level courses.
Third and Fourth Years
Students should take at least 30 credits at the third and fourth year level. At least 24 of these credits must be CINE courses, and include CINE_V 331 and CINE_V 445.
Cinema Studies courses taken in other programs and departments must be approved by the Cinema Studies undergraduate advisor.
First and Second Years
Students are required to take CINE_V 100 and 9 credits of CINE 200-level courses.
Third and Fourth Years
Students should take at least 18 credits at the third and fourth year level. At least 15 of these credits must be CINE courses.
Cinema Studies courses taken in other programs and departments must be approved by the Cinema Studies undergraduate advisor.
First and Second Years
Students are required to take CINE_V 100 and 9 credits of CINE 200-level courses.
Third and Fourth Year
Students should take at least 48 credits at the third and fourth year level. At least 39 of these credits should be CINE courses, and must include CINE_V 331, CINE_V 445 and CINE_V 449. Cinema Studies courses taken in other programs and departments must be approved by the Cinema Studies undergraduate advisor.
