As part of UBC Theatre and Film’s ongoing commitment to promoting diversity in filmmaking, the UBC Rogers Communications Multicultural Film Project brings in a globally recognized filmmaker each year as the Phil Lind Multicultural Artist in Residence. This year, we are honoured to welcome Montreal-based director, producer and cinematographer Miryam Charles as our 2021/2022 Phil Lind Multicultural Artist in Residence.
Miryam Charles is a director, writer, producer and cinematographer born in Haiti and currently living in Montreal. Her work explores themes related to exile and the legacies of colonization.
She has produced and directed several short films, including “Chanson pour le Nouveau Monde (Song for a New World)” (2021), “Les Temps (The Times)” (2021), “Deuxième génération (Second Generation)” (2019), “L’Album rouge ou l’intention poétique (The Red Album or The Poetic Intention)” (2019), “Une forteresse (A Fortress)” (2018), “Drei Atlas (Three Atlas)” (2018), “Vers les colonies (To the Colonies)” (2016) and “Vole, vole tristesse (Fly, Fly Sadness)” (2016).
Her films have been presented at various festivals in Québec, as well as internationally. Miryam recently completed the direction of her first feature film, Cette Maison (This House), which will be presented as part of the 2022 Berlinale Forum program. Her current projects include the feature film Le Marabout and the short film “Au crépuscule (At Dusk)”.
As the Phil Lind Multicultural Artist in Residence, Miryam will be working with the students in our FIPR 469 class, led by instructor Alejandro Yoshizawa. She will be offering feedback to the students, fostering the next generation of Canadian filmmakers and encouraging them to develop their own unique global perspectives.
Join us for a private online screening of her film This House on April 18 at 6 pm followed by a live Q&A with Miryam.
