We are delighted to announce that Dr. Shannon Walsh, Associate Professor of Film Production, has been named a Member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).
The RSC College is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership. These mid-career leaders bring a multigenerational capacity to address major challenges and seize new opportunities, including those in emerging fields.
Founded in 1882, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) comprises The Academy of Arts and Humanities, The Academy of Social Sciences, The Academy of Science, and The RSC College. The RSC recognizes excellence, advises the government and the larger society, and promotes a culture of knowledge and innovation in Canada and with other national academies around the world.
Shannon is a filmmaker and writer whose award-winning films cover topics ranging from labour rights, to grief and climate change. Her films, including Adrianne & the Castle (2024) and The Gig is Up (2021), have screened globally, sparking dialogue across disciplines and communities. Author of The Documentary Filmmaker’s Intuition (2024), she writes widely on inequality, gender and visual methods. Her work has been recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacDowell residency, and the 2023 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.
The RSC will formally induct the 2025 Fellows and Members of the College at a ceremony in Montréal this November.
Congratulations, Shannon!
