At UBC Theatre and Film, you’ll find a vibrant mix of scholars, artists, educators, and innovators reimagining how we tell stories, analyze culture, and connect with audiences. Whether they’re directing research projects, designing soundscapes, mentoring students, or diving deep into dramatic theory, our faculty, staff, and graduate students are always up to something interesting.
This series pulls back the curtain to share the work, ideas, and everyday moments that shape our community—one human at a time! Next up is Mia Booth, Academic Administrator/Advisor. Mia shares how she came to work in the Department, the questions she helps students with, and what she loves most about her role.
What first brought you to UBC and how did you come to work with Theatre and Film students?
I started at UBC in 2018 with the Bachelor of Media Studies program. I loved working with students, but after two years I wanted to learn more about how UBC supports teaching and learning, so I joined the Projects team at Arts ISIT. I was there during the chaos of the pandemic, which taught me so much about the resilience of UBC students, faculty, and staff.
When the Department of Theatre and Film approached me to cover a secondment, I was beyond thrilled, especially since I completed my undergraduate degree in Film Studies at McGill and loved every minute of it. I’ve been with the Department since July 2022, and I learn something new every day!
What does a “typical day” look like for you?
No two days are the same, but 98% of my job involves communication—whether that’s emails or conversations with faculty and students, campus tours for prospective students, or Zoom meetings with my advising colleagues across campus. I usually squeeze in a walk if I can around lunch time, or a cuddle from my cats when I am working from home.
What are some of the most common questions students bring to you?
- How do I transfer into your BFA programs? (short answer: check our program pages for the ‘Transfer Applications’ tab!)
- What is the difference between a BFA and a BA? (A BFA focuses on the practice of film or theatre, while a BA emphasizes theoretical and analytical study)
- Can I take an Acting class if I am not an Acting student? (Yes, we do have options!)
- How do I become as cool and stylish as you? (jk)
What do you wish more students knew or did earlier in their academic journey?
Your perspective on your education will change, so as much as you try and plan for all four years the second you get your offer of admission, things rarely unfold the way you think they will. Take some classes in areas you have no experience in, sign up for something just because it sounds fun, and stop by your advisors’ office to say hi in person. It is truly so valuable having faces to put with names, especially when so much is done online.

Marcus and Vito
Share your morning routine
I wake up early, feed my cats, Marcus and Vito, and hop on the bus across town to be on campus by about 8:30 am. I usually have a coffee with a splash of oat milk before even peeking at my inbox, and I check my stocks to make sure my millions are building equity nicely.
Do you have a hidden talent or a surprising hobby?
One of my greatest joys at the moment is baking fresh sourdough, and then promptly scarfing down half a loaf, which I think qualifies as a talent. I also love horseback riding. I’ve been riding since I was little, and I currently work part time at a stable in exchange for lessons with my coach. I also have a knack for distracting my coworkers during the workday.
Where is your favourite place on campus?
There is this little courtyard right behind the Anthropology and Sociology Building that is quiet and lovely.
What keeps you grounded amidst all the advising, emails, and scheduling?
Talking to students in person! It reminds me why I really love my job and love helping students. It’s so lovely to see their personalities shine through in conversation.
Is there a movie, TV show, or book you’ve particularly enjoyed lately?
Martyr! By Kaveh Akbar is one of the best books I’ve read lately. My standby for TV shows will always be Bob’s Burgers!
