UBC Theatre and Film is proud to announce that Masters Theatre Studies candidate Becky Gold has received a $17,500 SSHRC grant. Becky’s thesis research will focus on how theatre practice can be a vehicle for promoting self-advocacy and creating critical activist art for individuals and artists with Down syndrome. She intends for her research to address the gap that exists within the current understanding of disability theatre practice in Canada in order to promote further acknowledgement and understanding of Down syndrome artists’ artistic and activist capabilities.
What is the SSHRC Canadian Graduate Scholarships – Master’s Program?
It provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in eligible Master’s or, in some cases, doctoral programs in Canada. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.

Bio
Becky Gold is a M.A. Theatre Studies student in the Department of Theatre and Film. She graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario with a B.A. Honours in Drama and English. After graduating from Queen’s, Becky worked as a sound designer and stage manager for various theatre companies in Toronto. It was when she started working for Dramaway, a Toronto-based theatre company that facilitates performance and leadership programs for individuals with special needs, that she found her true calling within the theatre community. Becky’s passion for theatre and working with individuals with special needs drove her to pursue an M.A. focusing on theatre and disability.
