Our carefully crafted offerings are designed to open minds, broaden perspectives, and provide avenues for students to explore their interests and passions.
Whether you’re looking to dive deep into the history of cinema, unlock your inner storyteller, or explore the power of visual communication, we’ve got something for you. Here are a few suggestions:
CINE 200: Introduction to Canadian Cinema
What defines a nation and what role does cinema play in shaping that identity? In this fascinating course, taught by William Brown, you’ll grapple with these big questions by specifically exploring Indigenous Canadian cinema. You’ll not only watch powerful films but also engage with important critical texts by Indigenous scholars. From groundbreaking early documentaries to contemporary fiction, this course offers a strong introduction to Canadian cinema, prompting us all to reflect on what a nation is, and how film can both build, represent, and even challenge its very idea.

CINE 220: Hollywood Cinema 1930 – 1950
Step back in time to the golden age of Hollywood! This course, taught by Phd. candidate Ellie Berry, offers a deep dive into the aesthetics, economics, history, and technological characteristics that defined the Classical Hollywood period. If you’re a film buff keen on understanding the foundations of modern cinema, this is a must-take. (Heads up: if you’ve already taken FIST_V 220, this one’s equivalent!)
THFL 100: The Art of Storytelling for Stage and Screen
At the heart of all great theatre and film is a compelling story. In this course, taught by Patrick Parra Pennefather, you’ll delve deep into the fundamental elements of storytelling as approached within each of the core creative areas taught in our department: Acting/Directing, Design and Production, and Film Production. THFL 200: Visual Narrative: Exploring Design and Creative Process
Ready to tell stories without saying a word? This exciting new course, led by Patrick Rizzotti, is all about visual storytelling and blending practical design techniques with innovative creative methodologies. You’ll learn how to use design principles to shape compelling visual narratives, honing your skills in visual communication, and gaining a thorough understanding of the creative process. No prior theatre or design experience is required, making it accessible to all who are curious about the power of images!
THTR 317: Introduction to Directing
Do you dream about bringing a script to life on stage? In this foundational course, students will explore the core principles and practices of theatrical directing. Under the expert guidance of acclaimed director Leora Morris, you’ll learn how to analyze a script, work with actors, compose compelling stage pictures, and develop your unique directorial vision. This course is an essential step for anyone aspiring to lead a creative team and shape a performance.
