Eurassia Adamson
BA Theatre Honours, 2007
Recently opened up a 1200 square foot production studio right in downtown Toronto. My production company “SWEEP MEDiA”, formerly known as “NUTHOUSE PRODUCTIONS”, has opened its doors to Queen Street Studios for filming, photoshoots, gallery showings, and events. Sweep Media itself is working in projects across the performing arts genre in film, TV, print, and the ever expanding internet–the idea is to create a media factory. I recently studied this summer at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York for Acting. In the Spring of 2008 I will be returning to Manhattan to film a traveling show for a major TV network–yet to remain unnamed!

Dermot Hennelly (a.k.a Noel Burton, actor)
Acting, 1968

A professional practitioner in all media and a motivated teacher, I have a body of performance work as leading and character actor (England & Canada) in theatre, film, TV, radio, commercials and media. I have been artistic director for two companies, and a teacher at HE level at three universities. In England I was a company member of the Liverpool Everyman and the Leicester Theatre Company, where I worked with Michael Bogdanov, Mia Farrow, Alan Rickman, Heather Sears, Tim Rice and Henry Livings, among many others. In Vancouver, I performed regularly at the Arts Club, the Playhouse and City Stage theatres and was a regular on CBC Radio (including The Cherry Orchard, as Lophakin opposite Dame Peggy Ashcroft’s Madame Ranevskaya). H.E. Experience: At Memorial University I taught performance for the camera. At Regina University I taught performance, directed The Caucasian Chalk Circle and acted with senior students in Gammer Gurten’s Needle, The Trojan Women and Ken Mitchell’s The Shipbuilder. Victoria University hired me to introduce classical theatre into the B.A. Program at Matsqui Federal Penitentiary after directing Loot at the prison (documented in the film Inside/Out). I performed with students at UBC in Brecht on Brecht and The Firebugs. In Toronto I was a play therapist at the Children’s Hours Clinic for the treatment of emotionally disturbed children. I taught acting for the camera at Charles Stuart International Agency, Vancouver, and Focus International Agency, Montreal. Artistic Direction: In Vancouver, after playing a lead in Jack Darcus’s Deserters, I directed Twelfth Night at the Firehall Theatre. A critical and box office success, the production led the way to the foundation of the Vancouver Shakespeare Festival, which developed into Bard On The Beach as it is called today. Following the success of Twefth Night I founded the Open Theatre Company, a community-based classical theatre company. I incorporated an open door policy whereby anyone in the community without prior experience wanting to participate in a play could do so. I produced nine plays: by Chekhov (2), Shakespeare (3), Brecht, Vanbrugh, Frisch and Coward. Uncle Vanya – our most successful production staged in a warehouse on a 4000 sq. ft. set during Expo ’86 – inspired the movie Vanya on 42nd Street. In 1987 was artistic director for White Rock Summer Theatre. Acting for Screen & Television: Since 1993, in Montreal, as NOEL BURTON, I have acted in film, TV, theatre, radio, video games and commercials in English, French and Spanish, working with the likes of Mathieu Kassievtiz, Todd Haynes, Bob Rafelson, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Mischa Barton, Beau Bridges, Vanessa Bauche, Christian Duguay, Denise Filiatrault, Katie Holmes, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Pierce Brosnan, Christopher Plummer, Dominic Michel, Wesley Snipes, Nastasia Kinski, Michel Brault, Brian McKenna, Richard Attenborough, Denys Arcand, Stephan Gaghan, and Robert Downey Jr., among many others. I currently own SOUNDSWRITE Communications, a sound studio in North Vancouver. We write and produce audio and have done radio ads for TransLink, RE/MAX and many other clients. We also write television scripts for Knowledge Network. After receiving my BA at UBC I went on to BCIT to get a broadcast degree. My theatre training comes in handy every day as I’m a busy professional voice actor. I remember working in the Dorothy Somerset when it was tucked in behind the Frederic Wood. Feels like five minutes ago – doing productions for M.A. grads John Cooper and Richard Lucas and racing to English classes taught by Jerry Wasserman. I still do a lot of acting in North Vancouver for Deep Cove Stage, and Theatre West Van at Kay Meek Centre. I’ve been lucky enough to win a couple of Theatre BC acting awards and acting is still my passion. I have been to a few shows at Frederic Wood in the past couple of years and every time I go, I am always so impressed with the quality of the productions and the detail put into performances.I look forward to seeing the new studios.

“There is nowhere to go but keep on going and nothing to do but keep on doing.” (Inertia, performance installation by Ella Joseph, dedicated in memory of Peter Loeffler). The compulsion to visually express my thoughts through the creative process has not ceased, and responses to my work from audiences in Iasi, Bucharest, Vancouver, Utrecht, London, Zurich, Amsterdam, Honolulu, Toronto, and many other European cities has been deeply rewarding. The most recent audience encounter was as an artist and guest lecturer for “Art21: Identity”, at Castellani Art Museum, Niagara University in New York State. For the past year I live in Buffalo, NY, where, in addition to my continuing art efforts, I support the production and web-casting of videos in the corporate IT world with a competitor of AOL and Yahoo.

MA/PhD, Theatre, 1995 (and Film Production, 1988)
After completing my Diploma in Film production, I stayed at UBC to do my M.A. and my PhD in the Theatre department. I completed my PhD in 1995 and the same year, I got a job in the Film Department at the University of Regina. In 1997, I joined the film program at Carleton University, where I am currently Professor of Film Studies and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies.

My main areas of research are Canadian and Québécois cinema, screen adaptations of drama, and the horror film. I have written half a dozen books including “Denys Arcand’s ‘Déclin de l’empire américain’ and ‘Les Invasions barbares’” (2008), “Cinema as History: Michel Brault and Modern Quebec” (2007) and “Stage-Bound: Feature Film Adaptations of Canadian and Québécois Drama” (2003). I have also edited a few anthologies, such as “Canada Exposed” (2009, co-edited with Pierre Anctil and Christopher Rolfe) and “Self-Portraits: the Cinemas of Canada since Telefilm” (2006, co-edited with Tom McSorley). I generally teach “Introduction to Film Theory and Analysis,” as well as various courses on Canadian Cinema, adaptation theory and the horror film. I am currently putting together an anthology on “Theatricality and Cinema” (co-edited with Jeremy Maron). I also appeared as an “expert on zombie movies” in the documentary “Zombiemania” (2008, Donna Davies) along with Tom Savini and George A. Romero.

I saw my first UBC production in 1990 when I witnessed a very interesting and memorable production of Hamlet. Eight years later it was me on the stage. I have memories from the boards of the Freddy Wood Theatre that, no matter my career path, will by far be some of the happiest of my life. They will last me forever. Whatever stage I walk, the teachers and staff, my experiences, and the classes of the Freddy Wood walk with me. Congratulations on your 50th!

Michael is a funny guy – at least that is what he has been led to believe. Though misunderstood at times, one questions if he has invented his own little world with a language to go with it. His unique humor and view of the world can be due to his upbringing as a first generation Chinese Canadian. Growing up on the front lines of cultures clashing, trying to find a harmony between Western and Chinese cultures gave him strong views on social issues and multiculturalism. Life became even more colorful as Michael moved into his Pink Period: The Gay Years (1991 – Present). This fruitful period to date has seen Michael graduate from the University of British Columbia Department of Film & Theatre, exhibit as a photographer/artist, curate art shows, work as a costumer in film and TV and most notably writing and directing five short films. His latest PEKING TURKEY won five audience awards to date and has screened at over thirty festivals. He is currently pitching BOBBY ANGEL and MISS. MAFIA, two full-length feature romantic comedy scripts he wrote and is hoping to shoot his satire feature GOING WEST in the near future.

90 Years Young! A round of applause for a much loved Theatre at UBC alumna Jane Penistan who celebrated her 90th Birthday at the Jericho Arts Centre on Sunday February 10th, 2008, surrounded by family, friends and theatre colleagues. Now 90 years young Jane could easily run rings around many people half her age. Both a theatre and opera enthusiast Jane is currently an arts reporter for the Hampton Review and for the online arts journal Review Vancouver.

She was born and brought up in London and moved to Canada in 1949, settling in Stratford Ontario. Jane along with her husband revitalized the town’s economy by working to establish The Stratford Festival, a theatre festival dedicated to the works of William Shakespeare. British actor and director Tyrone Guthrie agreed to become the festival’s first Artistic Director. On July 13, 1953, actor Alec Guinness spoke the first lines of the first play produced by the festival: “Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this son of York.”

The drama festival is now one of the largest theatrical companies in the world employing approximately one thousand actors, directors, designers, stage managers, technicians, administrators and other staff. Jane enjoyed working for the festival for ten years during which time she enjoyed meeting many of the English speaking theatre’s premiere artists. When her five children were grown up, Jane “retired” to Vancouver, where she earned both a BA and MA in English from UBC.

Wayne Howard Robson
Theatre at UBC student, 1970’s

With great sadness we note of the passing of one of our exceptionally talented alumni, Wayne Howard Robson.

While a student in the UBC Department of Theatre in the 1970’s Robson was one of the stars of our stage. He appeared in many productions here including Scapino! (as Scapino) along with Bruce Greenwood, Bernard Cuffling, Camille Mitchell, Gordon McCall and Jerry Wasserman. A brilliant comic actor he also is also well remembered for playing Face, the conniving servant, in Professor John Brockington’s production of The Alchemist at UBC’s Frederic Wood Theatre – again alongside Jerry Wasserman who is our current head of the Department of Theatre and Film.

Wayne played a huge role in my early career. I counted him as a good friend, too. He lived in my house for a while and I lost a lot of money to him at cribbage, but I didn’t mind because he always made me laugh so much. He died way too young: a tragic loss to the Canadian acting community.” – Jerry Wasserman

Robson appeared in over 100 theatre productions, 30 feature films and 120 television productions, including 12 seasons as Mike Hamar on “The Red Green Show”. His honors include Gemini Awards for his roles in And Then You Die and The Diviners, a Dora Award for his work in Walking the Tightrope at Theatre Direct and a Blizzard Award in Manitoba forThe Diviners. He received Genie nominations for his roles in The Grey Fox and Bye Bye Blues, and was named Actor of the Year by the Vancouver Sun.

The actor recently became a 2011 company member of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and was scheduled to make his debut this season as Grampa in The Grapes of Wrath. The Festival has announced that it will dedicate that production to his memory. More here: http://www.citizennews.ca/?p=5705

Robson is survived by children Ivy and Louis, and their mother Lynn.

Goldie Semple
It is with great sadness we note the passing of one of our most accomplished alumna, Goldie Semple. She will be greatly missed and our deepest sympathies go out to her many friends & family. Read a wonderful tribute to Goldie by Richard Ouzounian in the Toronto Star. “Goldie Semple, one of Canada’s finest classical actors, who divided her career between the Shaw and Stratford Festivals, died Wednesday, following a long battle with cancer. She was 56.”

Goldie Semple starred in a Theatre at UBC production of Tartuffe by Moliére, directed by Klaus Straussmann.

Goldie Semple also starred with her husband Lorne Kennedy in the Theatre at UBC production of Tartuffe by Moliére, directed by Klaus Straussmann. In the photo are (standing) Alumnus Lorne Kennedy and Lee Taylor (centre).

Colin Thomas works as both a theatre critic and playwright. He has been writing about theatre for The Georgia Straight for the past 15 years and has worked as a critic on many programs for CBC radio.

The Chalmers Children’s Playwriting Awards have honoured each of his last three plays for young audiences: ONE THOUSAND CRANES; TWO WEEKS, TWICE A YEAR; and FLESH AND BLOOD. All of these scripts are published and productions have received Jessie Awards in Vancouver and Dora Awards in Toronto. Companies across Canada and throughout the United States have mounted Colin Thomas’s works for young people. Prestigious American productions include those at The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and The Kennedy Centre in Washington, DC. Thomas’s work has also been seen in many other countries, including Germany, Japan, the former Soviet Union, Hong Kong, Austria and Australia, and his writing has been translated into French, Japanese, and German.

Critics and audiences are equally enthusiastic about SEX IS MY RELIGION, the first play that Thomas has written specifically for adult theatregoers. This play is published by Scirocco Press and Ballet B.C. has based a ballet on the work. The theatrical version of SEX IS MY RELIGION has been mounted in Vancouver, Toronto, Houston, and New York.

Thomas story-edited the Juno Award-winning documentary, A PLACE CALLED CHIAPAS. He was once a regular contributor to Sesame Street. And he is currently shopping around his screenplay, FAIRY CHRISTMAS.

RICHARD WOLFE APPOINTED AS PI THEATRE’S NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

(February 13, 2008) – The Board of Pi Theatre announces the appointment of Richard Wolfe (Theatre at UBC MFA, Directing Alumnus) as successor to Del Surjik. Mr. Wolfe is the company’s third Artistic Director in its 24 year history. Wolfe’s tenure as Artistic Director of Pi will commence this week. “I am very pleased to welcome Richard to Pi. The board is excited by his artistic vision and looks forward to working with him to position the company for our next phase of growth. Del Surjik will be involved in the transition period as AD emeritus until his relocation to Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon this summer” said Shawn Bouchard, President of the Pi Theatre Board of Directors. “Pi has a rich history in Canadian theatre and I’m very excited to have been chosen to lead the organization’s artistic activities at this point in its evolution. Vancouver is fast becoming recognized across the country as a theatre centre of extraordinary quality,” stated Wolfe. “The work produced by those who have chosen to call Vancouver home is as vibrant, passionate, and formidable as any in Canada. I’m excited by Pi’s mandate to engage with dramatists from the French Canadian and international repertoires and I look forward to bringing together local, national and international theatre makers through the ongoing activity of this outstanding company.” Del Surjik, outgoing Artistic Director commented, “I heartily congratulate Richard on his appointment. I have great respect for him as a colleague and for his passion for theatre and he has been a standout component of this community for many years. Artistic renewal is an exciting time in any theatre company’s life and I have great confidence in Richard’s ability to take Pi Theatre forward into a new and vigorous future.” Richard Wolfe is an accomplished award-winning theatre artist who has twelve years of experience as an Artistic Director and who has directed over 50 productions in cities around the country. After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan’s drama program, Wolfe started his professional career working with 25th Street Theatre in Saskatoon. After working as an actor, director, dramaturge and producer from Edmonton to Newfoundland, Wolfe came to Vancouver to earn his MFA in directing from UBC. He is a founding member of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, See Seven Performing Arts Society and Theatre Conspiracy. He is also a member of the Lincoln Centre Theatre’s Director’s Lab in New York, the Literary Managers and Dramaturges of the Americas; has participated in the Director’s Project at the Shaw Festival, is the recipient of three Jessie Richardson Award nominations for Outstanding Director and has received the Ray Michal award for Outstanding Body of Work by an Emerging Director.
