Anthony Shelton

Acting Head

About

Anthony has worked at UBC since 2004, first as director of MOA (2004-2021), and then as a professor of Art History, Visual Art and Theory during which he did a six month stint as acting head. Before that he held curatorial positions at the British Museum, Royal Pavilion, Museums and Art Gallery, Brighton and the Horniman Museum, London, which he combined with teaching at Sussex University, The University of East Anglia, and University College London. In 2000 he moved full-time into higher education taking-up a teaching post at the University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Anthony has curated thirteen exhibitions in the UK, Austria, Portugal and Canada and has over two hundred publications, including books, edited volumes, chapters, articles and reviews on aspects of Mexican and South American popular and Indigenous cultures, the history of collecting and critical museology. Anthony is not completely new to theatre and film and has written on puppetry. He also served for a few years on the board of the Vancouver International Film Festival.
