William Brown Receives GCRC Research Cluster Funding

Congratulations to Dr. William Brown, Assistant Professor (Cinema & Media Studies), on receiving a 2025 Grant for Catalyzing Research Clusters (GCRC) for his project Cinema Thinks The World! Research Excellence Clusters are interdisciplinary networks of researchers working together to solve challenges that transcend traditional boundaries associated with departments, institutions, and funding agencies. William’s ambitious research initiative brings together scholars and practitioners from across disciplines to foster interdisciplinary research, explore ways to dewesternise and decolonise film, and develop partnerships that straddle practice and research.

At its core, Cinema Thinks The World seeks to transform cinema and media studies at UBC by fostering a dynamic and inclusive scholarly community. Through its unique integration of research and practice, the cluster emphasizes the importance of audiovisual scholarship in addressing complex cultural, historical, and ecological questions. The cluster will host a series of 36 events over the next two years—including public screenings, symposia, grant-writing workshops, and a conference. These initiatives aim not only to generate new research and creative projects, but also to position UBC as a leading global hub for decolonial cinema and media studies.

We look forward to the impact Cinema Thinks The World will have at UBC and in the wider academic community!
