Dr. Jerry Wasserman has taught for both the Theatre and Film and English departments for 44 years. As Department Head of UBC Theatre and Film from 2007-2012; writer of numerous texts that are considered the gold standard for Canadian Drama; and inspiration to students lucky enough to have him as a teacher, we celebrate his contribution. He will remain active in numerous pursuits as an actor on stage and screen; as theatre critic for The Vancouver Sun and The Province; and as producer, director and editor of vancouverplays.
JERRY WASSERMAN, B.A. (Adelphi), M.A. (Chicago), Ph.D. (Cornell) is Professor of English and Theatre, specializing in modern drama and theatre history with particular interests in Canadian theatre and popular entertainments.  His books include MODERN CANADIAN PLAYS (2 vols.), now in its 5th edition, TWENTY YEARS AT PLAY: A NEW PLAY CENTRE ANTHOLOGY,THEATRE AND AUTOBIOGRAPHY: WRITING AND PERFORMING LIVES IN THEORY AND PRACTICE, co-edited with Sherrill Grace, and SPECTACLE OF EMPIRE: MARC LESCARBOT’S THEATRE OF NEPTUNE IN NEW FRANCE.  He also wrote and hosted MODERN CANADIAN THEATRE, a 12-hour telecourse for BC’s Knowledge Network.  Wasserman has published widely on modern drama, modern fiction, and blues literature. He reviewed theatre for CBC radio for 17 years and is currently theatre critic for THE PROVINCE newspaper in Vancouver. He has sat on the board of Playwrights Theatre Centre and the Canadian Theatre Critics Association, and has more than 200 professional acting credits for stage and screen (see www.imdb.com).

Jerry Wasserman Scholarship in English and Theatre

A $1,000 scholarship has been established by friends, colleagues and former students in honour of Jerry Wasserman’s 44-year career as a Professor of English and Theatre at UBC.
The Scholarship is given to an undergraduate major or honours student (in 3rd or 4th year) in English, Theatre or both, who has demonstrated academic excellence as well as promise in the performing arts (through practical activities such as acting, directing, dance, design, scriptwriting, etc.).
The scholarship is made on the recommendation of the Dept. of English in even years and the Dept. of Theatre and Film in odd years. Preference will be given to double majors in English and Theatre.
