Of course we celebrate National Canadian Film Day!!
This year on April 19, we’re thrilled to present Mina Shum’s 1994 Film Double Happiness featuring actor Sandra Oh, especially since Ms. Shum (an alumna of the Film Production program-1990) is presently working on her new film with the same team as Double Happiness of Sandra Oh & Director of Photography Peter Wunstorf, entitled Meditation Park. Ms. Shum will be present at both of the events on April 18 & 19.
Opening for Double Happiness is the winning short film produced by the students in the Cultural and Community Story Telling, FIPR 469 course, led by Instructor Alejandro Yoshigawa, and coached by our Phil Linds Multicultural Artist in Residence Sudz Sutherland. Part of the UBC Rogers Communications Multicultural Film Production Project, the FIPR 469 films will be presented on Tuesday, April 18, and then judged by Ms. Shum, selected faculty and staff and then announced with the winner opening our National Canadian Film Day Celebration on April 19.

Double Happiness is a 1994 Canadian drama film directed by Mina Shum, co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada. The film stars Sandra Oh as Jade Li, an actress struggling to assert her independence from the expectations of her Chinese Canadian family. Callum Keith Rennie also stars as Mark, Jade’s love interest.
Oh received critical acclaim for her performance, and won the Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role did Alison Grace for Best Editing. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture (Mina Shum), Best Direction (Mina Shum), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Callum Keith Rennie), Best Original Screenplay (Mina Shum), Best Cinematography (Peter Wunstorf) in the 1994 Genie Awards.

Bio: 
Writer and director, Mina Shum’s award-winning features have won top festival awards at TIFF, Berlin, Torino, Vancouver as well as Director’s Guild and Writer’s Guild honours.  Films Double Happiness and Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity (co-written with Dennis Foon) had their US premieres at Sundance. Her films have been released commercially in over 50 countries. Most recently, Ninth Floor was named TIFF TOP TEN 2015 and honoured with the WIFTV Artistic Achievement Award. Shum is now preparing her next feature, Meditation Park.
