UBC THEATRE AND FILM CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF FILM CLASSES!
In 1966, when we were the UBC Department of Theatre, we ran the first ever film-centric undergraduate class, “History of the Film” taught by Don Soule and the next year, in 1967, we ran the first film production undergraduate class, “Introduction to Film Production” taught by the well-loved Professor, Joan Reynertson. Students from non-Arts departments lined up to take these courses thinking that watching films in class would beat lectures any day. Generations of UBC alumni enjoy film to this day thanks to these Professors passionate love of this artistic practice and expression.
Under the leadership of the new Department Head at the time, John Brockington, who succeeded Dorothy Somerset in 1966, film courses were born in a department that changed to UBC Theatre and Film in 1992 and now boasts excellence in five programs: BFA Film Production, BA Film Studies, BFA Acting, BFA Theatre Design and Production and BA Theatre Studies.
To honour this occasion, that now sees countless alumni flourishing in the film industry, we are joining forces with alumni UBC to bring Atom Egoyan, one of the most respected filmmakers of his generation and a true artist, to the Point Grey campus for a very special evening Monday, November 6, 2017, 6:30-9:00 pm at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre (6163 University Blvd) in celebration of our 50th Anniversary of film classes in UBC’s Department of Theatre & Film.
Atom Egoyan will share how he tells compelling stories in Canadian film and a rapidly changing industry, and why bold film-making has never been more important than it is in our current global political climate. Atom Egoyan is the director behind modern classics such as Exotica, the Oscar-nominated The Sweet Hereafter, Ararat, and Chloe. A master of visual and verbal storytelling, Egoyan takes bold non-linear routes through complex psychological terrain in his films.

In the afternoon, there will be a free screening for our Department’s students of his film Calendar and then a keynote speech from Atom Egoyan after which he’ll answer questions. This will also be in the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre. 1:00pm – lunch, 1:30 – watch the film, 3:00-4:00 – Atom Egoyan keynote and Q&A.
