Alumnus O. Corbin Saleken
Over the course of Canadian Film Week – with National Canadian Film Day at its centre, Weds April 20 – VIFF VanCity will screen a dozen films old and new, one of which is UBC Theatre and Film, Film Production alumnus (1995) O. Corbin Saleken’s Patterson’s Wager.
The hometown debut of the award-winning feature film about a man who discovers that he has the unpredictable ability to see two minutes into the future, stars Fred Ewanuick, Chelah Horsdal, BFA Alumnus Alex Zahara, Michelle Creber, Anne Openshaw, Garry Chalk, Gillian Barber, and Daniel Jeffery.
There will be a post-screening Q&A, with, among others, O. Corbin Saleken, and actors Fred Ewanuick, BFA Alumnus Alex Zahara, and Michelle Creber.

We also congratulate Corbin Team Patterson’s Wager for all the nominations at the upcoming Twister Alley International Film Festival, particularly Fred Ewanuick (Best Actor), Chelah Horsdal (Best Actress), and Alex Zahara and Garry Chalk (Best Supporting Actor).

One moment Charles (Fred Ewanuick) is alone in his living room, the next moment there’s rain and thunder and lightning, then a branch suddenly materializes out of nowhere and crashes to the floor in front of him. Then it all just disappears, just like that, leaving no trace behind.
Before he’s able to process the bizarre event, it starts raining outside, only this time for real. Then there’s a huge crack of thunder, and a bolt of lightning suddenly shoots down and hits a tree across the street and a branch breaks off and falls to the ground.
Is Charles losing his mind? Was it all just a really strong case of déjà vu, as Audrey (Chelah Horsdal), his girlfriend, later suggests? Or could it be that maybe, just maybe, he’s developed the unpredictable ability to see two minutes into the future?
From this arresting premise first time BC filmmaker O. Corbin Saleken creates a delightfully unpredictable comedy about relationships, family mythologies, and the illusory nature of knowledge.

Corbin Saleken is an award-winning filmmaker who lives in Vancouver, BC. He has a BA in film and television studies from the University of British Columbia, and he attended the 2010 Werner Herzog Rogue Film School in New Jersey. In 2013, he won the Most Promising Filmmaker award at the Spokane International Film Festival. His short films have screened at film festivals around the world. Patterson’s Wager – which he wrote, directed, produced, edited, and self-financed – is Corbin’s first feature film.

Corbin’s thoughts on his time at UBC:
A couple of weeks into being a film major at UBC, I was given 400 feet of 16mm film and a Bolex camera and I was then told to go out and shoot anything I wanted. I’ll never forget the experience, because it was the first time in my life that I felt like an actual filmmaker.
All of the analogue film technology I was taught at UBC may now be obsolete, but the lessons and techniques passed on to me by my wonderful UBC film instructors have no expiration date.
