Professor Tom Scholte will be facilitating Rehearsing Conflict: Workshop Performance using Forum Theatre techniques on June 21 – 11:30am-1:30pm at Dorothy Somerset Studios, UBC for Staff, Faculty, and/or anyone interested in this topic and means of creating change.
This summer, members of the UBC community have come together to share and act out stories of conflict in order to find solutions, challenge assumptions, and build understanding. Join us June 21st for a unique theatrical experience that will feature the results of this work.
Our free workshop performance will involve reflection on the difficult conversations we all face in the UBC workplace and there will be space for interactive community dialogue. In forum theatre, some audience members even voluntarily become part of the story by jumping on stage. Everyone is welcome to attend and interact with the performance at their own comfort level, however. There is no cost to attend, but please RSVP at http://bit.ly/CTJune21 and email any questions to conflict.theatre@ubc.ca.
What is Forum Theatre?
Forum Theatre is a type of theatre created by the innovative and influential practitioner Augusto Boal, one of the techniques under the umbrella term of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO). This relates to the engagement of spectators influencing and engaging with the performance as both spectators and actors, termed ‘spect-actors’, with the power to stop and change the performance. As part of TO, the issues dealt with in Forum Theatre are often related to areas of social justice with aims to explore solutions to oppression featured in the performance.
