Fire up the popcorn popper scary movie lovers, and mark Sunday, Oct. 26 with an “X”. Why? Because that’s the premiere of The Dorm, MTV’s new original horror movie, directed by UBC Film Assistant Professor Rachel Talalay (Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Dr Who).
The Dorm is a psychological horror movie starring Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect). It revolves around Vivian (Knapp), an awkward college freshman who struggles with major self-esteem issues but undergoes a transformation into a flawless, seductive beauty at the hands of her new dorm mates. Cassie Steele (Degrassi) plays Sarah, a funny and unpredictable queen bee who turns Vivian into her pet project. Max Lloyd Jones (Teen Wolf) also co-stars.
Rachel Talalay has worked on six of the A Nightmare on Elm Street films, producing Parts 3 (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors) and 4 (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) and directing Part 6 (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare). Additionally, she has worked with filmmaker John Waters, producing his Cry-Baby (starring Johnny Depp), and Hairspray (starring Ricki Lake).
Most recently she directed this season’s two final episodes of the long running cult hit TV series Dr Who which air Nov 1 & 8, 2014.
Note: Next up Talalay’s back to back directing work on two Dr Who episodes – which end the series 8th season – are scheduled to air November 1 and 8. The episodes titles have recently been announced: Episode 11: ‘Dark Water’ airs Saturday November 1 and the season finale Episode 12 is titled ‘Death In Heaven and airs Saturday November 8. Both the episodes were directed by UBC assistant Film Prof Rachel Talalay and written by Steven Moffat. The Dorm premieres Sunday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. on MTV [ET, PT].
