Beloved voice professor Gayle Murphy, BFA Acting Program, has just returned from another year of teaching at Canada’s National Voice intensive. Presented by lbs/sq” performance in association with York University School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design and hosted by the Centre for Indigenous Theatre at Artscape Youngplace in downtown Toronto, the Voice Intensive’s foundation lies in one simple principle: at the heart of every actor’s practice lies his breath, her voice, and our response.
The Voice Intensive is a four-week, full time training and research institution with curriculum designed for professional theatre and film actors, as well as directors, playwrights, dancers, performance artists, voice teachers, and advanced students.
Started in 1982 and headed by Canada’s foremost voice coach and teacher, David Smukler the program’s faculty includes ten of the most respected voice and movement practitioners in Canada and the United States. The location moved to UBC in 1998 and Gayle joined in 1992.
Every year, the faculty of the Voice Intensive collectively chooses four Shakespeare plays for the curriculum and in 2016 they chose Love’s Labour’s Lost, Pericles, Cymbeline, Macbeth.
