First year MFA Candidate in Film Studies and writer/director Jason Karman’s stereoscopic 3D dance film The Promise has a special screening on Friday, October 28 at Cinematheque. UBC alumni, and cinematographers Stirling Bancroft CSC and Peter Planta, also worked on the film.
Jason Karman is a Vancouver-based screenwriter and director whose films have screened at festivals in Brazil, Hong Kong, China, across Europe, United States and Canada. He received the Gerry Brunet Memorial Award at Vancouver Queer Film Festival in 2011, and in 2015 was recipient of the Jury Choice Award at Reel Pride Winnipeg. Additionally, Jason is a 3 year recipient of the production fund at Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society.
THE PROMISE
The Promise, featuring dancers from the Oregon Ballet, Chauncey Parsons Hildestad and Avery Reiners, is about two men travelling together, sharing a romantic connection, and making sacrifices in order to achieve personal fulfillment. Cut-ins between a field, a natural open space, and an intimate place that is darker and dreamlike, the conflicting spaces are metaphors of our public and private thoughts. The Promise is a commentary on the challenges of moving forward while aging; enthusiasm invites opportunity and familiarity creates comfort.
