FILM STUDIES PROFESSOR BRIAN MCILROY, A VISITING RESEARCH FELLOW AT TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN, IRELAND.



Brian McIlroyFaculty member Brian McIlroy was a visiting Research fellow at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in February 2017.  He was sponsored and nominated by the Department of Drama, Film and Music in the School of Creative Arts at Trinity College Dublin.  The alma mater of Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett, among many famous Irish writers, Trinity has been a university since the 17th century.
While there Brian gave three talks, two to a faculty, graduate and postdoctoral student body in the Humanities Institute building:
“Biographical film research methodological challenges”  (thoughts on research challenges when tracing the life of a filmmaker)
and
Guiness Beer“Sidney Olcott: Texts and Contexts”   (an overview of this Canadian born Early cinema filmmaker, a contemporary of D.W. Griffith., who had directed such stars as Mary Pickford, Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson).
In addition he gave a lecture to a film major class on Irish cinema:
“The Northern Ireland Troubles and Film” 
He spent his time meeting and communicating with the Heads of Film and Media Studies from Dublin’s four universities, and did research in the Liam O’Leary Film Collection in the National Library of Ireland.   Discussions were had at possible joint research ventures between our Departments.
