Cinema and Media Studies Master’s Candidate Jemma Dash Receives a SSHRC Grant!
Congratulations to Jemma Dash on your Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Grant (SSHRC) – Canada Graduate Scholarships-Masters Scholarship Award)! After receiving her BA in Film Studies and Psychology from UBC, she is completing her first year of her Masters in Cinema and Media Studies. Going into her second year, this funding will support her research!
Jemma’s thesis examines the form and function of the modern movie trailer in the context of social media. Exploring the intersection of film and digital cultures, this project seeks to understand how contemporary cinematic paratexts are shaped both by and for social media. Further, this project considers how multi-platform incarnations of the trailer text invite various forms of online consumption. This thesis is interested in questions such as: How do retweeted promotional GIFs, teaser trailers or popup advertisements alter or inform our understanding of the term ‘trailer’? How has social media influenced spectatorial engagement with promotional filmic texts? What does it mean to ‘follow’ a film’s social media profile?
