Ernest Mathijs “takes film buffs down the rabbit hole.”

event_ernest_rabbit_holeUBC’s student newspaper, The Ubyssey, profiles UBC Film Professor Ernest Mathijs in it’s Our Campus feature.
The article shines a light on his cult cinema class. For Mathijs started his course on cult cinema in 2008 — the first of its kind in the world — the rabbit hole is more than just figurative.
“In most cult films, there’s an appearance of a strange rabbit,” said Mathijs as he introduced the day’s screenings: Rabbit’s Moon and Donnie Darko.
As bizarre as it may seem to the uninitiated, it does provide insight into what exactly a cult film is.
“It’s there. It’s flagrant. It’s in everybody’s face … and it makes no sense. I think that, in a very brief nutshell, is the essence of cult cinema,” said Mathijs.
