BRIAN MCILROY
Short Term Visiting Research Fellows are nominated by Departments and Schools at Trinity, and allow those so chosen to give a public lecture on their research, speak to Trinity’s graduate students, and explore international research collaborations. The School of Drama, Film and Music at Trinity nominated Professor McIlroy. He will give a lecture on Irish-Canadian filmmaker Sidney Olcott (1873-1949) and explore joint research possibilities concerning the recent cataloguing of the unique Liam O’Leary Film Collection in the National Library of Ireland.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to share my research on the early cinema (Toronto born) filmmaker Sidney Olcott, who made a number of films in Ireland before its independence, and to network with Irish film (and drama) scholars enthused McIlroy. “ I’m hoping that the fellowship might help create some joint projects between our respective departments.”
The Trinity Long Room Hub (TLRH) is Trinity College Dublin’s research institute for the Arts and Humanities. It encompasses the Library and the Schools of Drama, Film and Music; Education; English; Histories and Humanities; Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies; Law; Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences; Religions, Peace Studies and Theology; and the Department of Philosophy. Its mission is to:
- Provide a stimulating and experimental research culture that advances and promotes the excellence of Trinity’s Arts and Humanities research internationally;
- Catalyze and facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects;
- Increase the visibility and the impact of this research and demonstrate its relevance for contemporary and future societies;
- Provide a focal point for debates on the challenges facing the world today informed by the long-term perspectives of Arts and Humanities research.
As one of Trinity’s four flagship research institutes dedicated to advancing the university’s strategic research priorities, the TLRH organizes its programmes and activities around Trinity’s five Arts- and Humanities-led research themes:
- Creative Arts Practice;
- Digital Humanities;
- Identities in Transformation;
- Making Ireland;
- Manuscript, Book and Print Cultures.
Its prestigious Visiting Research Fellowship (VRF) programme has been central to the delivery of its interdisciplinary mission and to strengthening its international networks by bringing Trinity’s researchers into intensive dialogue with the best of their respective fields.
Brian McIlroy, B.A.(Sheffield), M.A.(Leeds), Ph.D. (UBC), specializes in Canadian and Irish Cinema. Other research interests include British cinema and television, documentary, early cinema and Irish literature. He is the author, editor or co-editor of six books, including Genre and Cinema: Ireland and Transnationalism (Routledge, 2007). His work has appeared in such journals as The Canadian Journal of Film Studies, The Canadian Journal of Irish Studies, Cineaste, Film Criticism, Literature/Film Quarterly, Mosaic, and Screen. In 2011, he was awarded the Killam Trusts Award for Excellence in Mentoring Graduate Students.
