HALLIE MARSHALL
Assistant Professor Hallie Marshall has secured a Faculty of Arts International Student Research Award. Hiring two undergraduate students Mariam Barry (recent graduate of BFA Acting) and Lizzy Fu (BFA Production) over the summer, the project is aimed at working with the Jessie’s diversity committee to find a way to track diversity in the Vancouver Theatre community.
The Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards has announced a new diversity mandate and the Vancouver Now Representation and Inclusion Award in an effort to address a serious concern in the lower mainland theatre community. With approval from the UBC Ethics Office, Marshall will be the supervising faculty member from the Department of Theatre and Film meaningfully contributing to the discussion of diversity in Vancouver. The team will be developing a survey enabling the Jessie’s goal of attaining actual data in order to build a searchable database.
Hallie’s Bio:
Hallie Marshall, B.A. (Queen’s), M.A. (MUN), Ph.D. (UBC), specializes in theatre history and contemporary British drama, with a particular interest the reception of Greek drama from antiquity to the present. She has published on the plays of Sophocles, Aristophanes, Tony Harrison, Ted Hughes and Sarah Kane, and the reception of classical plays in Canada. She is currently completing a book on the classical plays of Tony Harrison and the history of classical reception in British drama. Her future projects include: an article on the history of the book in fifth-century Athens, an article on Tony Harrison and Latin Imperial Poetry, a book chapter on Tony Harrison’s translation of Aeschylus’ Oresteia, and conference papers on Tony Harrison’s adaptations/translations of 17th-century French plays, and a paper what the contemporary competitive dance competitions of the Cook Islands can tell us about ancient Athenian choral performance. Her research has been supported by SSHRC, UBC’s Hampton Fund, the Apollo Programme at CCANESA (University of Sydney), and the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Study.
From August 1, 2016-July 31, 2017 she will be a Wall Scholar at the Peter Wall Institute of Advanced Study.
