Moya O’Connell
BFA Acting Alumna Moya O’Connell plays The Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland and Yelena Andreyevna in Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov this season at the Shaw Festival.
A theatre company inspired by the work of Bernard Shaw producing plays from and about his era and contemporary plays that share Shaw’s provocative exploration of society and celebration of humanity, it is in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
In her 9th season at the Shaw Festival, Moya shares her thoughts on her time at UBC:
“The BFA acting program at UBC opened me up to the world of the theatre. I grew up in a very rural area and had not been exposed to much theatre before going to theatre school. (not that I let ANYONE know that). The UBC BFA acting program was a perfect fit for me. It gave me specific tools to approach classical text, a truly world class voice program, and gave me the opportunity to work on incredibly interesting and varied works. Over those three years I worked on Brecht, Jacobean Tragedy, Shakespeare, Greek Tragedy, Chekov, Musicals, new Canadian plays, contemporary works and many other genres and styles. The majority of my work and my career has been spent in classical repertory companies. UBC gave me a great foundation for this kind of work.
The staff in the UBC BFA are inspired, kind and talented. The continued to support me in my professional career and I remain friends with many of them to this day.”
