Four actors from the Vancouver area are needed to participate in a research project titled: Utilizing BOS Method Effector Patterns as a Mechanism for Emotion Control in Contemporary Acting.
Gayle Murphy (The University of British Columbia), Tom Stroud (The University of Winnipeg), and Ines Buchli (York University) will lead the project. The research is national in scope and is being funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
The purpose of the project is to investigate the potential of the BOS Effector Patterns as a safe and efficient practice for professional actors to access emotion.
The Effector Patterns were developed by psychologist Susana Bloch, neurophysiologist Guy Santibañez, and theatre director Pedro Orthous. (The acronym “BOS” refers to the first letter of the surname of each of the originators.) The originators studied differences in muscle tone and breathing in relation to basic emotions. They discovered that by changing breathing patterns and by activating specific muscles to change facial expression and body alignment, emotions can be accessed in a purely physical way.
The central questions of investigation are: Can BOS Effector Patterns offer actors a means to mitigate emotional vulnerability in relationship to scene partners and in the creation of character? Can the patterns help actors adapt to different styles of theatres and find consistency in repeating emotional moments?
You will train in the effector patterns and then apply them to monologues and scene work in rehearsals, and in an informal workshop performance. After the rehearsal and performance process, you will be invited to speak about your experience of the patterns in an interview with the investigators.
The Schedule:
February 16 – 23, 2019 BOS Effector Patterns Workshop (8 days)
June 8 – 28, 2019 3-week rehearsal and workshop performance
