Each year our first-year MFA directing students are given the opportunity to direct one-act plays within the THTR 515 course. The plays, chosen by the directing students, are brought to life with the help of Theatre Design and Production students and third and fourth year BFA actors. Presenting a double bill:

Away Uniform
by Tina Satter
Directed by Larisse Campbell
Away Uniform is an unsettling and humorous examination of young people using ritual, memory, sports and movement to find community with each other, in the emotional moments of their lives. The play imagines a separate place, a farm on the plains, where our characters use sports drills, ritualistic recreation and poetic language to create a kind of home for each other, as they make sense of their lives and the choices they have made.
Common: Hope is in Winnipeg
by Marie Beath Badian
Directed by Christopher Lam
Hope is in Winnipeg is a window into the beginning and end of a tumultuous relationship between Becca, a mysterious girl from Winnipeg and Snaps, an urban lofty-dreamer of a boy. It is a play about trust, hope, longing and the circumstances that lead to or create barriers for falling in love.
Content—
Away Uniform: Mature language, AAVE language, depicts, alludes to and/or describes illegal drug use, predatory relationships, bodily functions, disabilities and extreme beliefs about religion
Hope in Winnipeg: Use of misogynistic and homophobic language, explores themes of unhoused status, mental health, self-harm, and emotional abuse
