Leora Morris Receives Sam Black Award for Education and Development in The Visual and Performing Arts

We are pleased to share that Leora Morris, Assistant Professor of Acting & Directing, has received a 2025 Faculty Research Award. Leora was awarded the Sam Black Award for Education and Development in the Visual and Performing Arts, which recognizes outstanding contributions to art, music, creative writing, theatre, or film, as well as scholarship in the fine and creative arts. She was nominated by fellow Theatre and Film faculty member Dr. Shannon Walsh.

“Leora Morris is a director of exceptional vision whose artistic achievements have significantly influenced the fields of theatre, performance, actor training, and research-creation. Her productions demonstrate world-class artistic excellence; her scholarly inquiries reshape how we understand performance; and her pedagogical innovations model best practices in ethics, care, and community engagement. Most importantly, her work moves people: intellectually, emotionally, and collectively. She makes theatre that builds worlds, fosters imagination, and reimagines what performance can do in our current moment. She is exactly the kind of artist and educator this award was created to recognize, and I am honoured to have put her name forward.”
—Dr. Shannon Walsh

Congratulations, Leora, on this well-deserved recognition!
