BRAVO TO MFA FILMMAKER GREGORY COYES ON YOUR SSHRC GRANT!
MFA Film Production MFA candidate and filmmaker Gregory Coyes
(Good Medicine Media) has received a $17,500 for 12 months beginning in May 2017, researching SLOW MEDIA.
From Gregory:
SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL
SLOW MEDIA is a form of still frame video production that features few, if any, edits in programs that run for a minimum of twelve minutes. The result is concentration on “real time” as a viewing priority, a rarity in the menu of media that is currently being offered to mainstream viewers. SLOW MEDIA is an alternative to the compressed timelines and accelerated concept delivery of the majority of current media.
Initially inspired by the advent of high definition video in 1999, the SLOW MEDIA concept was further influenced by the release of a number of feature films produced and/or directed by Indigenous film-makers. The most prominent of these are Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001), and Ten Canoes (2006). Both of these films featured Indigenous concepts of time that were demonstrated by extended shots of natural landscapes as an integral part of the narrative.
A deeper examination of the evolution of the aesthetic of Inuit cinema in Canada’s Arctic led me to begin to question the North American mainstream applications of video. Is tightly edited, high impact programming serving us as a society that values productivity and well-being?
With Professor Tom Scholte (Dept. of Theatre and Film, UBC) as my advisor, and Dr. Alan Kingstone (Professor of Cognitive Science, UBC) consulting, my plan is to apply a grounded theory research methodology in controlled screenings of a variety of SLOW MEDIA installations. I will be examining a variety of SLOW MEDIA variables including edited and unedited versions, length, audio accompaniment, as well as content that is seasonally matched to locale, and time of day.
This research phase will culminate in a two-part Masters thesis project including both a written thesis, and a SLOW MEDIA installation.
