BFA Acting Intermediate student Heidi Elric has been awarded the prestigious Wesbrook Scholarship, an annual designation awarded to a maximum of twenty outstanding undergraduate students.
A Wesbrook Scholar must stand in the top 10% of their class, and have demonstrated ability to serve, work with and lead others. Nominated by their Faculty/School and selected by a special committee, the winners are presented with a $1,000 scholarship and a certificate and the Wesbrook Scholar designation appears on the student’s permanent record.
Heidi’s story:
I am a third year student in the BFA Acting and Sauder Master of Management programs. I spent my first year at UBC studying commerce, for which I became a member of the Dean’s Honour Roll and Golden Key Honour’s Society. I also joined the Arc Initiative, interning for local entrepreneurs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and spearheading a journalism project on their lives.
I missed theatre deeply, however, and auditioned for the BFA Acting program that same year. I returned to UBC as an actor in training, a commissioned playwright for the Centennial Celebration, a TA for Sauder’s OBHR department, a budding dancer and aerial silk artist, and after my acceptance to the B+MM program, a business student once again.
My time at UBC has been an absolute blessing. My BFA classmates, professors, and directors, have challenged, grown, and fulfilled my soul more than I ever thought possible, and commerce keeps me grounded in the practicalities of the world.
In an era of specialization, we are often told that chasing too many dreams will get us nowhere, but winning the Wesbrook scholarship has challenged that for me. Choosing multiple paths has already taken me further than I figured I’d get, and I can’t wait to see where else I’ll go.
