Associate Professor Patrick Rizzotti has spent the summer in Edmonton designing the set for the Citadel Theatre’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Directed by Mieko Ouchi, the Tony Award-winning musical follows a group of young competitors as they navigate the pressures and triumphs of a high-stakes spelling bee with heart and humour.
Joining the creative team is UBC Theatre and Film MFA alum Ana Camacho, who served as Assistant Set Designer on the production.
“It has been a joy to design The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee for the Citadel,” says Rizzotti. “The show is funny, generous, and deeply human, and the set design has been about creating a world that can hold both the chaos of the spelling bee and the emotional lives of the young people inside it. Working on a production of this scale, with such a thoughtful and skilled artistic and production team, has been a deeply rewarding collaborative experience.”

As well as being an Associate Professor of Design and Production, Patrick is an award-winning set designer whose work spans theatre, opera, and television across Canada and the USA. His latest collaboration with one Canada’s leading theatre companies reflects the strong professional connections between UBC Theatre and Film faculty and the Canadian performing arts community. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee runs until August 2.
