Ernest Mathijs Publishes New Book 100 Cult Films: The Sequel
April 1, 2026
We are pleased to share that Dr. Ernest Mathijs’ latest book, 100 Cult Films: The Sequel, has been published. A follow-up to the original 100 Cult Films, co-authored with Xavier Mendik, this new volume expands the conversation with a further selection of films celebrated for their cult status. The first book offered a carefully curated list of 100 films; this sequel presents another 100 while exploring how cult cinema—and the world around it—have evolved.
In 100 Cult Films: The Sequel, readers are guided through one hundred additional films, ranging from the 1911 Italian silent Dante’s Inferno to Ti West’s horror trilogy (X, Pearl [2022], and MaXXXine [2024]). This richly illustrated volume highlights the work of filmmakers such as Stanley Kubrick, Paul Verhoeven, Ana Lily Amirpour, Stephanie Rothman, Rob Reiner, and Dario Argento. Spanning films from Iran to Brazil, South Korea to Sweden, Japan to the United States, and from the high North to the Australian outback, the book reflects the global breadth of cult cinema. The book presents a variety of genres—including science fiction, romance, horror, musical, vampire, comedy, and action—and engages with the debates and controversies that surround these works, raising questions about identity, home, belonging, exoticism, censorship, and what it means to be truly “weird.” 100 Cult Films: The Sequel reinvigorates ongoing conversations about the field while underscoring its relevance within today’s dynamic cultural landscape.
The book was launched last month at the 19th edition of the Offscreen Festival in Brussels, which Ernest attended.
Congratulations to Ernest on this exciting publication!
