With this support, Christine will develop A Companion Guide to Film Theory—an open-access digital textbook designed to help undergraduate students navigate the complexities of classical film theory. Students in Cinema Studies often face financial barriers due to the high cost of anthologies, which are also frequently incomplete or lacking in sufficient explanatory context. This project offers a free alternative that bridges the gap between primary theoretical texts and student understanding, while avoiding reliance on copyright-restricted materials. The result will be a more consistent, accessible, and high-quality learning experience for both students and instructors.
Christine is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in Cinema Studies at UBC Theatre and Film. Her pedagogic research focuses on bridging film theoretical, psychoanalytic, and ideological approaches with evidence-based scholarly teaching in film and media studies. She has a particular interest in curriculum design, repurposing ‘traditional’ teaching and evaluative practices, and learning technologies. Her discipline-specific research focuses primarily on film theory, Lacanian psychoanalysis, and the work of Slavoj Žižek. Her pedagogic and discipline-specific work has appeared in The Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, Film-Philosophy and The International Journal of Žižek Studies; her book in the series Film Thinks, Slavoj Žižek: A Cinematic Ontology, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury.
Congratulations to Christine on this achievement, and best wishes for the continued development of this important project!
