2021/22 Visiting Scholar of Centre for Cinema Studies, Dr. David Christopher

UBC Theatre and Film is proud to announce the 2021/22 Visiting Scholar of the Centre for Cinema Studies, Dr. David Christopher. David has a PhD in Critical Cultural Studies in Cinema and Media from the University of Victoria. He is an Assistant Professor of Media Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China.

David researches media from a cultural studies and political economy perspective. For his work as a Visiting Scholar at UBC, he is collaborating with Prof. Ernest Mathijs on a study of the films and career of Canadian-Italian auteur-director Vincenzo Natali. David wishes to produce a book and a complementary documentary on the cultural and ideological import of Natali’s films.

“I want to establish a new paradigm for the reception studies of Canadian cinema that considers its unique production circumstances and cult audiences.”

David is excited to use the Centre’s library as a source for films that are similar to Natali’s in their Canadian auteurship and cult audiences and use them to make relevant comparisons to his own films. He hopes his research will have a penetrating impact on the scholarly discourse of Canadian cinema that has significantly overlooked Natali’s profound significance.
