It’s Market Day in Lyon, France.  The Revolution is but a whiff away. To subdue the growing hostility towards the ruling class far in Paris, a troupe of French Actors, heavily subsidized by the bureaucrats in the town, have set up to perform a delightful comedy. The hope is to take the citizen’s minds off growing tension between the upper class and peasants. Word gets out of this unique performance opportunity and a long forgotten Italian commedia troupe takes flight from Milan crossing the Alps to Lyon. The Italian troupe has not only exhausted their repertoire in Italy, but now the Italian audiences no longer find their vulgar and base comedy funny anymore! This has forced the Italian troupe to become the Mountebanks of their forefathers, and lure citizens to fork over their coins for trinkets and potions that will make their lives, their loves and their humours much, much better. Or will they? The Italian troupe also hopes to give a last commedia performance before calling it quits. The French Troupe knows that to keep their heads on, they must give the performance of a lifetime and therefore secure a safety in the ducal palace. Or is that really safe?? The French and Italian Troupes confront each other on this Market Day and somehow manage to “share the stage” for what will become a revolution in itself!
