Frederic Wood Theatre

Our mainstage, the 400 seat Frederic Wood Theatre, is located in the northwest Arts quadrant of the campus, near the Art History and Visual Arts, Music, and Architecture buildings, and adjacent to the Belkin Art Gallery and the Museum of Anthropology.

The theatre has a fully equipped proscenium stage with fly tower (25 CW sets), traps, and a built-in revolve. Built in the classic style of the 1960s, it is the home of our Theatre at UBC season of productions, and the heart of the Department. The building houses shop, classroom and office spaces. As the needs of the Department have grown over the years, our rehearsal and classroom spaces have expanded to other areas of the campus.

A computer lab equipped with Vectorworks 12, Photoshop 8, Lightwrite 4, MS Office, Internet Explorer, etc. is available for shared use. Students must provide all other drafting equipment and software.

Shops

The production facilities and shops are located in the Frederic Wood Building. (Click here to view map). The scene shop is well equipped for wood and metalwork, and has a 20 x 40 foot movable paint frame. The costume shop is fully equipped and has an extensive costume stock. We have a small properties shop adjacent to the scene shop. The properties stock is one of the best in the city. The Department maintains reciprocal loan arrangements for costumes and properties with the major local professional theatres and film companies.

The Department sponsors the operation of a scene shop at UBC’s Great Northern Way campus. (Click here to view map) The shop is run as an independent operation, and serves as a major resource for Vancouver’s theatre companies, both large and small. It also is the storage site for the UBC scenic stock, and houses the largest thermoplastics vacuform machine in the city. In addition a new costume shop now operates alongside the GNW Scene Shop. The costume shop is available to arts organizations and artists to build and assemble costumes, scenic drops and fabric creations. We have a roster of wardrobe artists, cutters and seamsters available to create your next project.

Library

The University Library has the second-largest collection in Canada and subscribes to 70 periodicals in Theatre, Film and related fields. The Department has a small collection of scripts and some useful source material for designers. The Fine Arts and Music Libraries are quite good. The Vancouver Public Library also has a large collection of books in their Fine Arts Division. Library cards are available to UBC students for a small fee.
