The Persistence of Vision (POV) Film Festival is an annual event showcasing the short films made by students in the Department of Theatre and Film, Film Production Program at the University of British Columbia. Runs April 23 & 24, with the festival awards night on April 24. Doors open at 5:30PM, show starts at 6:00PM.

POV26’s provocative, edgy short films depict the work of emerging filmmakers entering the Vancouver film industry. These surprisingly candid films brazenly explore delicate topics through the confident gaze of their generation. Past POV films have screened at multiple international film festivals including TIFF, VIFF, Cannes and Berlin. See them here first.
Of the twenty short dramas being shown in this festival, women fill over half of the key roles-director, producer, and cinematographer. Greatly contrasting the controversial gender issues found within the film industry, perhaps these 40 talented students project future gender equalization?
This year’s line-up covers topics as varied as: a minimal and absurd meditation on assisted suicide (I’m Ready); one woman’s journey through a culture that commodifies women (Gimme Some Sugar); an aging architect’s fight against claustrophobia and the mundane (Cement); and a haunting drama about a young woman’s attempt to outrun her mother’s fractured legacy (Pretty Veins).
Interspersed between these darker films are light comedies about soccer moms summoning Satan (Bitchcraft); two gangsters, an ex-marine and his fiery wife (Vanessa); and an endearing young man who befriends his action camera (The Guy Kind of Sucks).

Running for its 26th year, POV Film Festival is one of the longest running film festivals in Vancouver. POV was founded in 1989 by director Lynne Stopkewich (Kissed, Suspicious Rivier, The L-Word) and Producer Stephen Hegyes (Brightlight pictures). Over the last two decades, POV has served as a launching ground for the careers of many of Canada’s top filmmakers, including Mina Shum (Double Happiness), Bruce Sweeney (Excited), James Liston (Severed), Julian Clarke (District 9), Greg Middleton (Passchendaele), Gwen Haworth (She’s a Boy I Knew), Nimisha Mukerji and Philip Lyall (65_RedRoses).
